Is My Webcam Working?

Click Allow and see your camera feed instantly. This test displays live video, reports resolution and FPS, and lets you record clips for playback — all processed locally via the MediaDevices API with zero data uploads.

This test verifies your webcam is functional by displaying a live preview and reporting the actual resolution and frame rate your camera delivers.

Most webcams support 720p (1280x720) at 30 FPS minimum; 4K webcams output 3840x2160 at up to 30 FPS.

Permission Required

We need access to your camera to test it. No video leaves your browser.

What Do Your Results Mean?

Result Range Meaning
Good 1080p+ at 30 FPS Your webcam delivers HD video suitable for video calls and streaming.
Warning 720p or FPS 15–29 Functional but limited — acceptable for basic calls, may appear choppy in low light.
Bad Below 720p or FPS under 15 Image quality is poor. Check USB connection, lighting, or consider upgrading your camera.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

Camera not detected by the browser

Check that no other app (Zoom, Teams, Skype) is using the camera exclusively. Verify the camera is enabled in your OS settings and reconnect the USB cable.

Permission denied error appears

Click the lock icon in the address bar, set Camera to Allow, then reload the page.

FPS drops below 15 during the test

Improve room lighting, close background tabs, and avoid USB hubs — connect the camera directly to your computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I test if my webcam is working?

Click 'Allow Access' to grant camera permission. A live preview appears showing your video feed. The test displays resolution (e.g., 1920×1080) and frame rate (e.g., 30 FPS). Record a clip and play it back to check quality.

Why is my webcam not detected in the browser?

Three causes: (1) camera not connected or disabled in system settings, (2) browser permission denied — check the address bar lock icon, (3) another app (Zoom, Teams) using the camera exclusively.

Is any video data uploaded to a server?

No. The MediaDevices API captures video locally. No backend server exists. Recordings stay in browser memory and are discarded when you leave the page. Verify in DevTools Network tab.

What resolution and FPS should my webcam show?

Most webcams support 720p (1280×720) at 30 FPS minimum. HD webcams show 1080p (1920×1080). 4K webcams output 3840×2160. FPS below 15 indicates bandwidth or hardware issues.
